MATCHA SUGAR COOKIES

What’s green, sweet, taste like chocolate (I’ll explain later) and good with milk or hot tea??  Matcha Sugar Cookies!!   For my Dad’s birthday party, a friend of my sister made Matcha Tiramisu.  It was perfect because I’ve always wanted to try Tiramisu but I’m not a big fan of coffee.  Also I’ve heard about matcha everywhere but just haven’t thought of baking with it. It was love at first bite!  It was something I’ve never tasted before and I love it.  The flavor was unique and not too strong.  So I looked and looked for the tiramisu recipes and I thought  “Whoa…. That takes too long and I want something Matcha, fast!”  (That Matcha Tiramisu is going on my “next project” list!)

So the next best thing is to make cookies using matcha. This recipe for Green Tea Matcha Cookies was just the perfect recipe.  As for the matcha itself, if you are not familiar, you can find this in the tea aisle.  This is the one that I used.  I will need to find other recipes for this because this stuff is not cheap but it is worth it!

Matcha is rich in nutrients and has a lot of health benefit for you. It’s high in antioxidants, gives you energy, yet it leaves you calm.  It’s also known as good for the brain and detoxifying your body.  One other interesting fact is there is there is a special Japanese tea ceremony to prepare matcha green tea. You can watch this beautiful video that has a step-by-step instruction or if you have some time, you can watch this authentic Japanese Chado Matcha Green Tea Ceremony. They really take their time and the tea is a real labor of love.

Back to baking.  This recipe is a two bowl recipe (Hooray!!) but you do have refrigeration time (Aww, man….).  But like Yoda said “Patience you must have my young padawan”.  Wow, I just realized that the batch almost looks like Yoda!!  :):)

So I don’t want to cloud your judgement, but I need to prove that I’m not the only one tasting it.  When you eat this cookies, doesn’t it taste like chocolate?  Or is it just me?  🙂

Tips for making this cookies :

  • Refrigerating this batter do make the cookies rise up a little bit.
  • After you take out the batter from the refrigerator, leave them at room temperature for 10 minutes so it will be easy to roll into little balls.
  • You need to work fast so the batter won’t be too soft.
  • You can eat this cookie with a cup of hot tea or a tall glass of milk.  Either one works great!

Happy Baking!

  1. In a stand mixer bowl, mix butter and sugar for about 4 minutes. You should have a light colored and fluffy mixture.
  2. Add the egg, one a time and scraping the sides after each egg.
  3. In a medium bowl, sift the flour, matcha powder, baking powder and salt together.
  4. While the mixer is on a low speed, slowly add the dry mixture into the butter mixture. Scrape the sides and mix again until the mixture comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Chill the dough overnight.
  6. After the dough is chilled, take them out of the fridge for about 10 minute. This will make it easier to roll the dough into balls.
  7. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. With a medium size ice cream scoop, scoop the batter and then roll it into a ball. Place on the baking sheet. You need to work fast so that the batter won't be too soft.
  9. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes. You do want to check the bottom of the cookies so that it will be brown but still soft on top.
  10. Remove and cool on a wire rack.
